Roll-off dumpster loaded with black trash bags from a cleanout, below the top edge

What Can’t Go in a Dumpster in Asheville?

Most household junk and construction debris can go in a roll-off dumpster in Asheville. What can’t go in: liquid paint and solvents, fuels, batteries, anything still holding refrigerant, TVs and computers, tires and untested asbestos. Mattresses can go in for a per-item fee. Here’s the full list, and what to do with the things that stay out.

Every load from a dumpster rental in Asheville crosses the scale at the Buncombe County Landfill, and the landfill has rules about what it will take. A banned item in your box can mean an extra fee, or a load that has to be sorted before it’s accepted. Five minutes with this list saves that hassle.

What can go in with an extra fee?

Mattresses and box springs are the most common one. The landfill charges for them separately, so they’re billed per item. Tell us when you book so there are no surprises. Ask first about yard waste and large amounts of dirt or rock, because weight adds up fast.

The asbestos rule older Asheville homes run into

Many houses in Montford, West Asheville and North Asheville were built long before the 1980s. Buncombe County Air Quality requires a permit before you demolish or remodel any building in the county, and suspect materials such as old pipe wrap, popcorn ceilings and some tile should be tested before they come out. Asbestos can’t go in a roll-off dumpster under any circumstances.

How to load so you don’t pay extra

  1. Sort before you load. Keep banned items in a separate pile from day one.
  2. Keep concrete separate. A clean load can be recycled; mixed with trash, it’s billed as trash.
  3. Nothing above the top edge. An overfilled box can’t legally go on the road.
  4. Cover it before storms. Wet debris is weighed wet.
