A roll-off dumpster is an open-top steel container that a truck slides onto your driveway or jobsite, leaves for you to fill, and hauls away when you call. Dumpster Rental Asheville rents 10, 15, 20 and 30-yard roll-offs across Asheville, NC and the neighborhoods within about 15 kilometers of downtown, with delivery, 7 days, pickup and disposal in one price.
People usually land here with one of two questions: is a roll-off the right thing for my job, and what does renting one in Asheville actually involve? This page answers both, including the parts that are different in the mountains.

What is a roll-off dumpster, and when do you need one?
It’s the long, open-top box you see in driveways during a remodel. The name comes from how it’s delivered: the truck tilts its bed and the container rolls off onto the ground on steel rails.
A roll-off makes sense when debris comes out over several days, not in one afternoon. Remodels, roof replacements, whole-house cleanouts, construction and storm cleanup all fit. You load it at your own pace for a week, then it’s gone in one trip. Think of it as a temporary roll off container in Asheville: it stays only as long as your project does, then it’s gone.
Roll-off dumpster, junk removal or a dumpster bag?
| Option | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Roll-off dumpster | You’ll fill it over days: remodels, roofs, cleanouts, construction | Needs a spot for about a week and room for the truck |
| Junk removal crew | A handful of bulky items and no time to load | You pay for labor, so it usually costs more per cubic yard |
| Dumpster bag | Very small jobs on tight lots | Holds about 3 cubic yards with a strict weight limit |
| Front-load bin | Regular business trash on a schedule | Not built for construction or bulk debris |

What roll-off dumpster sizes are there?
| Size | Holds about | Typical Asheville job |
|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 3 pickup loads | Roof tear-off, garage, bathroom, concrete or dirt |
| 15-yard | 4 to 5 pickup loads | Kitchen remodel, flooring, one-floor flood gut-out |
| 20-yard | 6 pickup loads | Whole-house or pre-sale cleanout, deck removal |
| 30-yard | 9 pickup loads | New construction, additions, estate cleanouts |
For most home projects around Asheville, a 15-yard is the right call. See what each size costs on our Asheville dumpster prices page, or match your job in the size guide.
How does roll-off delivery work on mountain driveways?
This is where Asheville is different from a flat suburb, and where a national broker’s driver tends to get into trouble.
Room for the truck
To tilt the bed and slide the box off, the truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance. Low oak limbs over Montford and Kenilworth driveways and sagging service lines are what usually stop a drop.
Grade and curves
Much of North Asheville, Beaverdam, Town Mountain and Woodfin is built on grades a loaded roll-off truck doesn’t love. Before we book, we ask for a photo or the grade. If the truck can’t safely back up, we’ll say so and find a flat spot that works.
Red clay
Asheville clay turns soft after a few days of rain, and a loaded container on wet ground or grass will sink and rut. We place it on pavement or gravel whenever possible, and boards go under the rails on every drop.

Do I need a permit for a roll-off dumpster in Asheville?
Not on private property. If the box sits on your driveway, yard or parking pad, no permit is needed.
If it has to go on a city street or sidewalk, the City of Asheville requires a Right-of-Way Encroachment Permit before delivery, handled through the city’s permit office at 161 S. Charlotte St. Outside city limits, check with your town, such as Weaverville or Woodfin, or with NCDOT for state roads. Newer subdivisions may also have HOA rules on placement or rental length.
Roll-off dumpsters for homeowners and contractors
Homeowners
Cleanouts before a move or sale, flooring and kitchen remodels, roof replacements and the storm cleanup that still comes with living here. One flat quote covers delivery, 7 days, pickup and disposal up to the weight limit.
Contractors
Framing waste, drywall, roofing and demo debris on jobsites across Asheville and nearby towns. Ask about swap-outs: we pull the full box and drop an empty one in the same trip, so your crew doesn’t stand around. Crews still working Hurricane Helene rebuilds in Swannanoa, Biltmore Village and the River Arts District use this the most. See our Helene debris cleanout page.
What can go in a roll-off dumpster?
Good to go: household junk and furniture, drywall, lumber, cabinets, flooring, carpet, shingles, siding, decking and fencing. Concrete, brick and block go in a separate clean load.
Keep it out: asbestos, liquid paint and solvents, fuels and propane tanks, car batteries, appliances that still hold refrigerant, TVs and computers, and medical waste.
Ask first: mattresses, tires, yard waste and large appliances.
One rule catches people off guard: Buncombe County Air Quality requires a permit before you demolish or remodel any building in the county, whatever its age. If your house was built before the 1980s, get suspect materials tested for asbestos before you tear anything out.
Where does the debris go?
Construction and demolition debris from our roll-offs goes to the Buncombe County Landfill at 85 Panther Branch Road in Alexander, which has a dedicated C&D area. Every load crosses the scale there, and that ticket is what any weight overage is based on.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a roll-off dumpster and a regular dumpster?
A roll-off is an open-top container delivered for a single project and hauled away when full. A regular front-load dumpster stays at a business and is emptied on a schedule.
How long can I keep a roll-off dumpster?
Seven days are included. Extra days are billed at a flat daily rate if the job runs long.
How much space does a roll-off truck need?
Roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to tilt the box off.
Can a roll-off dumpster go on grass?
It can, but Asheville clay turns soft after rain and a loaded box will sink. Pavement or gravel is safer for your yard.
What size roll-off dumpster do I need?
Most home projects need a 15-yard. Roofs and heavy debris take a 10-yard, whole-house cleanouts a 20-yard and new construction a 30-yard.
Do contractors get swap-outs?
Yes. We pull the full container and drop an empty one in the same trip so your crew keeps working.
