What Size Dumpster Do I Need? Asheville Size Guide

For most Asheville home projects, a 15-yard roll-off dumpster is the right size. Go with a 10-yard for roofs and heavy debris like concrete, a 20-yard for a whole-house cleanout, and a 30-yard for new construction or a big estate. A quick rule: every 10 yards holds about three pickup-truck loads.

Picking the size is where most people overspend. Order too small and you pay for a second haul. Order too big and you’re paying to rent empty space, and on a steep or narrow Asheville lot, a box that’s too long may not fit at all. This guide is how we’d size your job if you called us.

Not sure? Describe the pile in our quote form and we’ll tell you the size.

How do I estimate how much junk I have?

Think in pickup-truck loads. A full-size pickup bed piled level holds roughly 3 cubic yards, so:

  • About 3 loads fits a 10-yard
  • 4 to 5 loads fits a 15-yard
  • About 6 loads fits a 20-yard
  • About 9 loads fits a 30-yard

People almost always underestimate. A single room of carpet and pad, a couch and a dozen boxes can fill half a 10-yard. If you’re between two sizes on a bulky job, go up one. A second haul costs more than the jump.

Why does weight matter more than size here?

Because every dumpster comes with a weight allowance, and a lot of Asheville debris is heavy for its size. A box can look half full and already be at its limit.

  • Shingles: roughly 250 to 400 pounds per square. A 20-square roof comes off at about 2.5 to 4 tons.
  • Wet drywall, carpet and insulation: far heavier than dry. That matters after a flood, and after any summer afternoon thunderstorm soaks an uncovered box.
  • Concrete, brick, block and the red clay and stone from hillside digs: a third of a 10-yard can already weigh 2 tons.

So on heavy jobs we size by weight, not volume. Tell us what’s going in and we’ll say which box keeps you under the limit.

Will the dumpster fit on my driveway?

This is the question national size charts skip, and it’s the one that matters most in Asheville.

  • Length. A 10-yard is the shortest box. A 30-yard needs a long, fairly level spot.
  • Truck room. The truck needs roughly 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet overhead to tilt the box off. Low oak limbs over Montford and Kenilworth driveways and low service lines are what usually stop a drop.
  • Grade. On the steep, curving drives in North Asheville, Beaverdam and Town Mountain, two smaller swaps are often safer than one big box.
  • Narrow lots. A 15-yard fits most in-town driveways in West Asheville and North Asheville.
  • Soft ground. Asheville clay softens after rain. Pavement or gravel beats grass.

A spot on your driveway needs no permit. A spot on a city street needs a City of Asheville Right-of-Way Encroachment Permit before delivery.

Sizing tips for Asheville homes

Older homes in Montford, Kenilworth and West Asheville

Many of these houses were built long before the 1980s. Buncombe County Air Quality requires a permit before you demolish or remodel any building in the county, and suspect materials should be tested for asbestos first. Asbestos can’t go in a roll-off, so plan it out before you size the box.

Helene flood cleanouts

Soaked drywall, insulation and carpet are heavy. For a one-floor gut-out, a 15-yard with the right weight allowance is usually safer than a 20. See our Helene debris removal guide.

Roofs

Count squares and layers, then call. Our 10-yard page has a roof weight table.

What if I pick the wrong size?

If you run out of room, call us. We can swap the full box for an empty one, which costs less than overfilling and paying for a load we can’t legally haul. If you ordered big and only used half, you’ve paid for air, so next time go by the table above.
